At the end of a remote valley in Zanskar, my guide and I spent time in the monastery kitchen learning from its head cook. When the light suddenly poured through the window I felt compelled to ask if I could make a portrait. It was apparently the first time he had ever seen himself on a camera screen: a mix of surprise, shyness and quiet amusement that quickly turned into shared laughter. One of those photographs that stays with you as much for the memory as for the image itself.
